Abbreviations and Acronyms Technical Writing

abbreviation of design

Understanding floor plan icons, patterns, and abbreviations can be intimidating — at least at first. That’s why we’ve created this A-to-Z guide of floor plan symbols and abbreviations. An initialism is an abbreviation formed from some or all of the initial letters of words in a phrase. The term word acronym can be used to refer to acronyms which are not initialisms. Embarrassingly, I only recently learned that there is a difference between acronyms and other abbreviations [1]. I had falsely believed that all letter combinations like MIT were acronyms, but this is not the case.

What Is a Vector?

Abbreviations are about communication and if you can’t communicate, you won’t get far. The abbreviations above are just a few of the most common used in product development. Once you dig deeper into a particular industry, such as medical products, you’ll find a whole new set to become familiar with, such as MEMS, FDA, and M/S. This article lists common abbreviations used in product development, and gives the non-obvious ones a simple definition. I recommend using the list below to learn more about the day-to-day language used in product development and to refresh when preparing for a design review or a job interview.

What is the Abbreviation for Designer?

Only abbreviations that also form a coherent word pronounced as word (and not letters) are acronyms. Thus SCUBA, and NASA are acronyms, while USB and FBI are not. Vector graphics are made out of small graphics like points, lines, and curves. The shapes within a vector use a mathematical equation that allows the vector to be resized without compromising the quality. In graphic design vocabulary, kerning is the space between two specific characters. Certain pairs of letters can create awkward spaces, and by kerning them you can adjust the space between them.

Expanded forms

A wordmark focuses on the business name alone rather than reducing it to a single lettermark. For instance, Google is already a memorable name, but if it’s combined with a strong typeface and colors, it results in a powerful wordmark. It's often used if a company’s name is made of two or more words. A monogram logo will shorten the company name by using only its initials, resulting in simplicity. For instance, NASA is easy to say and remember compared to National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

What You'll Learn in This Fundamental Design Terminology Guide:

You might use the abbreviation “DES” in situations where brevity is important, such as in technical drawings, blueprints, or shorthand notes. Why These Abbreviations Matter

RGB stands for red, green, and blue, and this color mode is additive, meaning that by mixing these primary colors in different combinations, we can simulate a bigger range of colors. Dr. Julia Rossi , a luminary in the field of linguistics, earned her Ph.D. with a groundbreaking thesis that delved into the cultural and historical dimensions of idioms, metaphors, and similes. Her work, spanning decades, has brought to light the dynamic nature of idiomatic expressions, illustrating how they serve as cultural artifacts, revealing the collective consciousness of a society. It’s a handy tool for saving time and space while still conveying the concept of design effectively.

Here's a fantastic emblem logo template you can easily customize on different design software. A widow is a short line or a word at the end of a paragraph or a column causing too much white space between paragraphs at the bottom of a page. An orphan is a short line or a single word at the beginning of a column or page. In graphic design vocabulary, grayscale is a monochromatic palette using different shades of gray in an image. A single image is composed of up to 256 combinations of shades of gray. This fluid nature of architectural practice demands continuous learning from professionals.

Use sourceable abbreviations

A serif is a small extra stroke at the end of each character. These typefaces are usually easier to read because the extra stroke allows our eyes to follow the characters more easily. Serif typefaces are widely used for body copy as they are deemed elegant and highly legible, depending on the size.

What Is Negative Space?

For instance, as sustainable design gains momentum, new terms and abbreviations related to green architecture and eco-friendly materials will emerge. Here are some different examples of floor plan symbols that depict walls. To save space, acronyms should be used as disambiguators, when necessary.

Chris Mattson is a professor of Mechanical Engineering at BYU, a White House awardee for his engineering (PECASE), and former director of engineering at ATL Technology. Lowercase glyphs are the non-capital letters that make up the rest of a text block. The name lowercase comes from the old way of setting type with printing presses. Printers kept the lowercase letters in the lower drawer of a desk. A sans serif is a character that doesn’t have the small strokes at the end of each character.

Furniture isn’t always included in blueprints, but it can be useful for helping clients envision how a living space might be set up. With Cedreo, you can easily move or reorient furniture symbols to suit client preferences. (And once you’ve finalized your basic interior design, you can create a 3D rendering of it in Cedreo, complete with 3D furnishings). Different floor plan drawings might use different scales, depending on what you’re trying to depict. In any case, scales are represented as “scale bars” — black and white lines with numbers — much like a drawing of a ruler. A shortening is an abbreviation formed by removing at least the last letter of a word (e.g. etc. and rhino), and sometimes also containing letters not present in the full form (e.g. bike).

If there is an article about the subject of an acronym (e.g. NATO), then other articles should use the same style (capitalisation and punctuation) as that main article. If no such article exists, then style should be resolved by considering consistent usage in source material. When using more precise terms like word acronym and initialism, please link to Acronym § Nomenclature, where they are explained for readers. Maintaining a consistent abbreviation style allows Wikipedia to be read, written, edited, and navigated more easily by readers and editors. If a guideline conflicts with the correct usage of a proper name, ignore it. Abbreviations in quotations from written sources should always be written exactly as in the source, unless it is a Wikipedia-made translation.

It is used to emphasize certain parts of a layout and to focus on a specific element. Regularly updating this library and ensuring that all team members are familiar with the necessary abbreviations can streamline international operations. Training sessions or workshops focusing on specific regional architectural nuances can also be invaluable. Walls are the most common element in a blueprint and are represented by different types of lines.

Uppercase characters are used at the beginning of sentences or the first letter of proper names. The name uppercase comes from the old-school typesetting printing presses. Slab serifs are characterized by thicker and heavier serifs compared to regular serif fonts. Slab serifs can be square, angular or rounded depending on the typeface.

It stands for Tagged Image File Format, and the format produces a higher quality image compared to the formats above. This is a mix of a wordmark and an abstract mark, a pictorial mark, or a mascot. The layout of this mark can vary depending on the elements you want to use.
